China Telecom’s Bold AI-First Strategy: Reshaping Telecommunications for the Future
TelcosChina Telecom is making headlines with its comprehensive strategy to transform from a traditional telecommunications provider into a technology-focused enterprise powered by artificial intelligence. At Mobile World Congress 2026, company president Liu Guiqing outlined their ambitious “cloudification, digital transformation and AI for good” initiative, demonstrating how the carrier is positioning itself at the forefront of the AI revolution.
The company’s achievements are already impressive: through a strategic partnership with China Unicom, they’ve created the world’s largest shared 5G standalone network, covering over 1.54 million 5G base stations. This collaboration has not only reduced infrastructure costs by an astounding $56.5 billion but also significantly decreased carbon emissions, proving that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Perhaps most striking is China Telecom’s AI implementation across its operations. Their AI-powered systems have reduced field technician visits by 35%, while AI-generated code now comprises 40% of their software development, boosting R&D efficiency by 20%. The company’s eSurfing Cloud platform has evolved into what they claim is the world’s largest carrier cloud service provider, supported by over 590,000 data center racks and an intelligent ecosystem built on their Xirang infrastructure.
